| efreeman | 10 | 2 | No | Got this for my 2.5 yr old for Xmas 06 and it was a big hit. He asks to play it and will play it many times in a row. A great first game. Obviously not much there for adults, but I make it fun for myself by saying Go Away Monster in different voices and accents each time. That gets giggles from my son. UPDATE 4/24/07 Tried this with one of my sons friends and it worked out really well. Update 6/19: Worked really well with cousins 3 yr and 5 yr old...enhance the game with funny faces..Update 1/10/08. haven't played much with my 4 year old last year, but my youngest (just under 2) can play with guidance. He sure likes throwing the monsters even if he can't quite say the words properly. |
| HappyProle | 10 | 2 | Some | We started playing this around 18 months with our daughter. She caught on pretty quickly that she was supposed to draw things out of the bag and place them on her board. By two years old she was playing the game how it is intended. So far this has worked better than any other game. Hearing her say: Another monsterrrrr! alone makes this a 10.
It's very short, so it's easy to get other adults to play. |
| helenoftroy | 10 | 2 | | This has been the most successful game I have played with my three year old son. He is anxious about drawing items, names them, and places them on shapes. This helps learning items names, speaking, motor skills, and shapes. This can also be played solo. This game has been perfect for my son. |
| LoMa | 10 | 2 | | Go Away Monster is a fantastic game for 2-1/2 to 4 year old - my boy has a giggling blast playing it. Everyone has their own player board showing a bedroom that you're supposed to furnish with a bed, lamp, picure, teddy bear, etc. There's a bunch of peices in a drw bag, like beds, lamps, teddy bear and such, plus several MONSTERS!!!!! The kids get a kick out of very seriously placing the furniture on their player board that they've drawn out of the bag. If you get a monster, you're supposed to excliam Go away, monster! and throw the monster in the box.
The game helps kids with dexterity, tactile judgement (figuring out what the pieces are in the bag by their shape), and also helps them create a sense of control in their world if they have bad dreams or are scared of monsters. It has a simple rule set for them to learn as well. A good, fun developmental game.
Nothing here for adults except to play happily with your kid. |
| Mark | 10 | 3 | Some | We got this game when our daughter was 3, and she loved it. She still asks for it now that she's 4. |
| metalchorus | 10 | 2 | Some | rated 10 for ages up to 4 ... after that it's pretty much worn out it's welcome. |
| NeeNee | 10 | 1 | Some | What NeeNee (age 2) would say if he could: I started playing this when I was fifteen months old. I was quickly able to catch the basics of drawing from the bag, taking turns, and matching the shapes to the right place on the boards. Also, to my parents' amazement, I could also distinguish the monsters separate from all the other pieces and look for empty spots on other boards if mine is covered. I can't wait until I can actually say Go away monster! as I throw them into the monster pit! |
| noisycrow | 10 | 2 | Some | My daughter is 22 months and she adores this game. There have been days where she woke up in the morning saying, Montehr? Montehr? It is very good for teaching turns - we always say out loud whose turn it is ( Momma turn! Baby turn! ) - and the girl seems to have taken that lesson to heart. It can get tedious for me to play the third game in a row, so anymore I usually do two and then move on to something else (often, Monkey Madness). |
| TimothyP | 10 | 2 | Some | This game has been a uniquely special one for us. My wife and I are gamers and this is the only game we own that our oldest son could play when he was 2.5 years old. He actually understands the concept of putting the pieces on the right spaces. He's not scared of monsters, so we use a variant where we just put the monsters in the room too. Our little guy usually has attention for 2-3 games in a row. This has been such a blessing to be able to play something with our little guy. This design is such a good idea. It gives kids the chance to match up shapes, and also the share - sometimes you give your piece to someone else for their room. I'm so glad to have this game! |
| XaaK | 10 | 1 | Yes | This was the first game I played with my daughter. We were playing this when she was only 14 months old. This will always be the first game I suggest to people wanting to get kids into games: I can't say enough good things about this game. |
| alex | 9 | 1 | No | My daughter started playing this game from 18 months. She asks to play it repeatedly. Though at that age she hadn't grasped the significance of the monsters and placed them carefully in the box (and turned them over if I put them in upside-down). |
| cagriggs | 9 | 2 | Some | I purchased this game for my two-year-old and he really loves it. We play as if we are all competing against the monsters, trying to get all the pieces to the room before we draw all the monsters. My five-year-old also enjoys this game and what's great is that the two of them can play the game together, without any adult supervision. Playing with my sons is fun because they are having fun, not because of the game play. This has been a big hit in our house. |
| ccmonter | 9 | 2 | Some | My 2 1/2 year old really enjoys this game when it is brought out, but rarely requests it. She does go around shouting go away, monster! even when not playing the game. She likes assembling the puzzle rooms . This is the game that taught her to take turns. |
| cobbz20 | 9 | 2 | | Great first game for kids. It teaches turns and sharing and it gives them a game of their own that they know how to play. Our 2 year old was able to pick this up right away, before she was able to play Candyland or Snails Pace Race. |

| porter235 | 9 | 2 | Some | Simple. Some adults will have fun just watching the kids scream "Go AWAY monster!" (Rated for YOUNG kids) |
| regai | 9 | 2 | Yes | This is the third game that I have introduced to my 2 year old twins. And the first time that I have seen that spark in their eyes. It is wonderful playing this game with them. The only problem are the fits that they throw when it is time to put the game away. |
| shaugville | 9 | 2 | Yes | We used to play this with my 2 year old just before before bed every night. She loved it! We play without the monster pieces, but will add them back in at some point. |
| Sprydle | 9 | 2 | Some | Fun to watch and play with young kids--my daughter started playing at about 3 yo. We found while she still likes to pull it out rarely at 3.5 yo, it never really became a must play for her (especially compared to Cranium Cariboo which she LOVES) |
