| fluffdaddy | 8 | | | Though Haba says this game is for 4 year olds, we have found that our eldest son (now 5) understands & enjoys the game a lot more now than he did a year ago. The concept that agenteasy mentioned (rolling another the dice of another player then moving your own piece) has finally "clicked" and he enjoys both short (one direction up the river) and long (there & back) races. |
| m_hamburg | 8 | | | Nice components and good decisions for little ones. I enjoy the game as well. As fluffdaddy says, I think that this game would be best for 5 and up. |
| agenteasy | 7 | | | The idea: Kids have a raft and try to get to the end of the river first.
The components: The game is made up of several sturdy cardboard pieces which interlock to make a different "river" every time. The rafts are cute little wooden rafts with a coloured flag at the top. A matching die is given to each player.
The way it works: Each section of the river has a symbol on it (a duck, a bottle, a boat and a fish). Each player starts the game by rolling their die and placing it on the raft (the die has a side with one of each symbol, plus a "wild" and an anchor to lose a turn). On their turn, the player would normally move their raft to the next section of river that has the matching symbol, but first they have a choice to make: They are allowed to roll one die, but it does not have to be their own! If they like what they already have, they can roll someone elses, hopefully giving that player a worse result for their next turn. First player to the end wins.
Comments: My rating for this game reflects how my son (3.5) enjoys the game. In this case, I think it is a little too old for him, which necessarily takes it down a notch or two. Although my son likes the game well enough, it does not get played that much. First, the game takes a bit of time to set up. Second, he cannot grasp the idea of rolling someone elses dice and then moving according to his own, so we play it as a straighforward roll and move game. Played that way, it is mildly entertaining but not enough payoff for the time it takes to set up. Still, it is cute and short, and there is always the chance he will warm up to it when he gets older. |
