| duchamp | 10 | 7 | Yes | Simply a must IMO. It`s a cultural technique everybody should learn at least basically. It`s like some basic literature from which many books (games) are derived from, depend on, etc.
It`s the feeling to make steps in a whole world, which is really exciting for kids, too. Start with a nice set and a learning program for PC or MAC - there are many available. |

Have a great time with my 8yo daughter, been teaching her the moves by playing limited games (eg. just Queen and Rooks, or just Bishops and Knights, etc.), and telling her whenever she has a piece in danger. She's very keen!
Check out the following sites specifically about teaching children chess:

| petegrey | 10 | | | This is not considered "The game of kings" on planet Earth without reason. This is a universal strategy game that can be learned and played at a basic level, or taken to very advanced levels. Your child in the U.S. can play this online with someone in India without any culture barriers.
If could only have one game-this is it.
Highly recommended. |
| phaedrus | 10 | | | I agree with Shade_Jon, this game is a must for anyone. The strategy grows with the player. My son started playing with me when he was 3, of course he is not some genius who beat me at every turn, but he did enjoy "crashing" the pieces and it was simply a good time had one-on-one with my boy. |
| pikkusiili2000 | 10 | 8 | Yes | Excellent introduction to strategy. |
| Shade_Jon | 10 | | | This is an essential game for anyone, young or old. Everyone should know the basics. If a kid takes to it, it could be enjoyment for a lifetime. There are also many beautiful sets available to please any kid. |

| gaharoni | 9 | | | Brain-burner for the kids. They would either really love it or will not want to play. Worth a try. |
| slapdash | 9 | 6 | Some | Everyone should learn to play chess. Young kids enjoy playing with the pieces, and can learn the moves, however I feel that it takes a lot for a child to truly understand the game.
I think chess is less of a game than it is a sport. There is no luck involved in chess and it requires a lifetime of study to master. |
| sosullivan | 9 | | | You can start them at 7 or even younger with the right ones. Teach them about controlling the center, and you have made a board gamer for life. |
| davebliz | 8 | 4 | Yes | Most kids like the varied moves available and tend to catch on to the game quite quickly. All three of my kids learned the game around age 4. |
| Doomfarer | 8 | 8 | Some | The kids really enjoy it while I don't. |
| helenoftroy | 8 | | | This is the first game that got me into more strategic boardgames. I was around 7 or 8 when I started playing against the computer. |

| Mark | 8 | | | I enjoyed this game as a teenager. |
| mentis | 8 | 8 | Yes | Chess, the classic abstract game. |
| shumyum | 8 | | | My son really likes it and makes up his own rules sometimes. They actually have chess club that takes kindergartners at his school and he is really into it. His twin sister is not so into it, but she humors her brother. |
| sigmazero13 | 8 | 8 | Some | Not too difficult to learn, if the kid wants to learn it. Strategy will develop over time, but is in my opinion a very important game to learn for ALL kids, as it can lay a framework for strategy and gaming in general for years to come, even if they eventually move away from ever playing it again.
Many kis will enjoy playing it as long as they aren't constantly getting destroyed. By destroyed, I don't mean losing , but losing badly every time . |
