| CDRodeffer | 8 | 7 | Yes | Mah Jongg is a tile / set collection game in the Rummy family, complicated by several high-scoring special hands. Many people play for money, so that fact may turn off some parents, even though many others only play for points or worthless chips. But the main thing that makes Mah Jongg ill-suited to many people is that, almost universally, the rule books that come with published sets are utter gibberish. Learn the game from someone who knows how to play, or if you must learn from written rules, those by Merilyn Simonds Mohr in The New Games Treasury are better-written and more easily understood than most. All that said, Mah Jongg is an attractive 4-player game that's fun to set up and play, and can be played by anyone old enough to learn the few symbols used in the game and calculate simple point totals. |
| jcarvin | 7 | 12 | Yes | There's no doubt this is a great game but young kids just won't get it. It's abstract and has completely different suits than what they're used to in a standard deck of cards. Try it with teens and preteens. |
