| jiffypop | 9 | 4 | Yes | Silly and gimmicky, but lots of fun. We always have tournaments to find the true champ! |
| laraberrycross | 9 | 5 | Yes | Sure, there's no strategy, but it's a lot of fun. |
| larryjrice | 9 | 4 | Yes | Mindless but enjoyable game of battling tops. It can be a pain to wind the string back up again but seeing the tops battle in the arena (or out of the arena) is good fun. |
| Matt Loter | 9 | 5 | Some | I loved our old set from the 70's as a kid. Mindless, but thrilling. |
| Admiral Fisher | 8 | 5 | | I had this when I was akid and had a lot of fun with it. I must have played it dozens of times between about the ages of 8 and 12. |
| cdefrisco | 8 | 5 | Yes | A few times a year this game is brought out and it ends up staying out for days (if not weeks). Everyone has a great time playing this game, and the lets do it again factor is very high. Lots of fun.
The only hard part is getting that string to wrap around the top correctly. This could be hard for the little ones. |
| Ed the Red | 8 | 3 | Yes | A fun, if somewhat mindless game - wind up your tops, pull the ripcord and away they go to battle it out in a circular arena. Battling Tops is the original game, with a larger arena and tops wound up somewhat laboriously with string. Spin to Win is a modern alternative produced by Toys R Us where the tops are spun by pulling out a plastic strip with teeth on it which is much quicker and easier for small fingers to do; the downside is that the teeth get destroyed over time and the tops stop workign all the time.
The game itself (either version) is great fun. One or more tops are often bounced right out of the arena, and the remaining contenders can be wholeheartedly cheered on. Each match only lasts a minute or less, so you don't have to wait for another chance if yours loses early on. First to 10 wins! |

| efreeman | 7 | 4 | | No rating as of yet, but at 3, my son is still clearly too young for this. He just doesn't have the manual dexterity yet. Update 1/08...at 3.5, still too young, I noticed his older cousin had more complex tops with draw strings that were much easier to manipulate....I'm wondering if those might make this obsolete before we even play. 1/1/09 update. Was able to play this in 2008, and my son enjoyed it. He isn't able to wind them, but can occasionally pull it to get it to spin properly. Pretty decent diversion. |
| CDRodeffer | 5 | 7 | No | People who played battling tops games as a kid, or who have fond memories of "My Summer Story" will want to introduce this to their kids. But I think some of the ratings here are a bit optimistic on the younger end. The dexterity and digital strength required to play a top game isn't really there for kids younger than about 6 or 7. I don't know any 3 or 4 year old kids who would not be frustrated playing this, and almost always need an adult or older child for assistance. Sadly, older kids are probably going to lose interest by about age 11 or 12, so there's definitely an age window for playing this one. |
