| Ed the Red | 9 | 8 | | I recently started playing this with my son at his request after he'd seen me playing it with a friend. Basically it's a Stratego variant, but where all the pieces (9 per side) have special abilities, and combat, rather than being automatically determined by rank, involves the play of cards. My son really enjoyed it and we've played a number of times since; he beat me (after a narrow miss in a previous game) in the 6th or 7th game, and he has really learnt quite a bit about how the different pieces interact, moving tactically, bluffing and thinking about what cards to play in combat. I was a bit surprised at how readily he took to the game, hence my strong recommendation. On a note of caution there is a fair bit of text on the pieces and some of the cards, and how they interact may require some logic (though I think all of the possible paradoxes are explained in the rules), so this may not be for every child. It only takes 10 mins or less, so you can easily play several games in a row (e.g. taking turns to be Sauron and the Fellowship) which are asymmetrical in powers and victory conditions).
It is also an excellent game for adults by the way! |

| sigmazero13 | 8 | 8 | Yes | Kind of like a glorified Stratego , but without the overwhelming-ness of pieces. However, each side has varying powers and victory conditions, and there are many different strategies. It can be tricky at first to master the nuances of the various playing pieces, but once they are learned, the game plays very quickly, with lots of options, yet lots of strategy. A good out-think my opponent game, and one that kids will enjoy playing while they subconsciously learn risk assessment and strategical planning. |
